Four Liverpool fans made the 1,800 mile drive to Kiev for the 2018 Champions League final – thanks to the support of insurance experts at HIC.

Jimmy Chapman from Oswestry in Shropshire had decided to travel independently to Liverpool’s showdown with Cristiano Ronaldo and the Galacticos of Real Madrid, the defending champions who on Saturday recorded their 13th Champions League title and their fourth in five years, but the trip was almost scuppered because of problems finding suitable insurance.

HIC provided Green Card cover for Champions League final

That’s where the team at HIC stepped in to help Jimmy, and his travelling companions Carl Jones, Peter Byron and Dan Chapman (his son), swerve the red tape and provide COBX Green Card cover enabling them to drive through Europe and on to the Ukrainian capital for the final

HIC are expertly placed to do the same for anyone fancying the drive to Russia for next month’s 2018 Fifa World Cup too.

The hopeful Liverpool party set out at 5pm on Thursday and had already reached the Polish border by 11am the following day.

Jimmy said: “We shared the driving but it was hard work through the night in the rain but we made good progress.”

The guys were going to hire a car for the trip but in the end they decided it would be easier if they used Jimmy’s Mercedes GL8 – decorated in the red and white of Liverpool, of course.

Drive to Kiev should take the Liverpool fans 32 hours

They anticipated the journey would take them 32 hours in total meaning they arrived at 2am on Saturday morning giving them plenty of time to get set for the final.

Once into the Ukraine the driving was restricted to just Jimmy and Peter as they were the only drivers named on the Green Card.

The trek caught the attention of the British media with Radio 1, Radio 5 Live and BBC TV all airing regular stories about Jimmy and his pals as they made their way through Europe to Kiev.

And the prediction for the Champions League final from our four intrepid travellers? With two of the best attacks in world football on show, not to mention two rather porous defences, they reckoned it would be a goal fest.

Fans predict Liverpool win in Kiev goal fest

Not surprisingly they all predicted a win for the Anfield club. Jimmy reckoned Real Madrid 2, Liverpool 3; his travelling companions being more ambitious fancying a two goal win in a six goal thriller.

And who did they think would score? Jimmy laughed: “The usual suspects, Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Marco Asensio, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino… take your pick.”

But all that optimism was before the nightmare intervention of Liverpool goalkeeper Loris Karius who gifted Madrid two goals and an overhead screamer from sub Gareth Bale.

Jimmy and his companions made the return leg in just 27 hours arriving home safely and claim free. They said it was an incredible experience, despite the disappointing result.
