Scrappage Rally 2017 – the quirkiest European car rally you will ever enter – is under starter’s orders.
The rally with a difference sets out from the The Bird In Hand, Wreningham, near Norwich on Tuesday, August 29, and heads for the Romanian town of Cluj which drivers should reach within four days.
The main challenge for the Scrappage Rally is to buy a car for £500 or under and convert it into a makeshift camper in which to sleep for the four nights of the rally.
Scrappage Rally will take you 1,700 miles through Europe
Organised and route-planned by Magnitude Events, the drive to Cluj is approximately 1,700 miles.
On arrival you can swap the boot of your car for a bed in a hotel room and enjoy a couple of days well-earned R&R including organised trips.
It’s also worth noting that beer costs less than £1 a pint in this part of the world, and after driving all that way you will probably need one. So what’s not to like?
It costs £199 per person (based on a team minimum of two people) to take part in the rally.
The price includes full rally info pack, ferry crossing to France, two nights accommodation in Cluj, return coach from London Luton International Airport to The Bird In Hand, 24 hour rally customer support and advice line and a Romanian travel guide.
Participants are advised to book the 18.05pm flight to London Luton which arrives at 7.05pm on Monday, September 4, (not included in the entrance fee).
Scrappage Rally cars support local charities
Your car will be disposed of in Cluj with the proceeds going to local charities before you fly home.
Those taking part in the rally can, but don’t have to, seek sponsorship to raise money for their own favourite charities.
All cars must be street legal and insured for European travel. Specialist companies such as Herts Insurance provide bespoke cover for rallies of this nature.
