A vintage VW campervan made half a century ago is set to go under the hammer and is likely to set a new British sale record.

The Type 2 camper’s pre-auction valuation is £90,000 – more than twice the price of a brand spanking new Volkswagen Transporter van.

The camper has undergone extensive restoration, with a new engine, gear box, wheels and fresh new paint job.

The left-hand drive van was imported from the US a decade ago when it was, quite frankly, looking its age.

However, the latest owner has returned the van to its former glory and, as it was in the summer of love, its year of manufacture, it is once again resplendent in “cumulus white and sea blue” livery, as this picture from Bonhams auction house shows.

Vintage VW campervan – built for comfort rather than speed

The camper is famed for its good looks, rather than its power. Even with an upgraded 2,030cc engine the motor only provides a 100hp – clearly built for comfort rather than speed.

The updated interior includes a fridge and electric hob, sound system with speakers,  wireless internet, drop down DVD player and multiple plug sockets.

The four year restoration project was completed in 2013 but since then the camper has covered less than 2,000 miles.

The van is being sold by Bonhams at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in West Sussex on Friday, June 30.

Vintage VW campervan – a “cult” vehicle from the summer of love

A spokesman for the auction house said: “The Type 2 is a cult vehicle, without doubt.

“It is arguably one of the most popular and easily recognisable vehicles in the world, thanks to its eye-catching design and associations with the summer of love in California.

“It revolutionised camper vans and inspired countless similar models from marques all over the world.

“The one being sold now is a fantastic example of the early ‘Splittie’, which, as Volkswagen’s original camper, is widely considered the most desirable.

“It’s very well restored so will be easier to drive and provide better accommodation than ever before.

“We think this will appeal to anyone looking for a fun and eye-catching vehicle to use for travelling or at historic motor sport events.”
